"Coming Home Again"

Why does his mother regret allowing him to attend boarding school?
She regrets allowing him to attend boarding school because she ended up passing away. She didn't know she was going to die, and they said this was the first time that she spoke her mind and said exactly what she wanted to say.  She felt like she made a mistake because he should have been with his family. At the time she thought she was doing what was best for him. She sent him because he was becoming too much like her.  I think she wanted him to get the best education possible and become like his father.

Then, she thought maybe it wasn't a mistake because she didn't think her son would have wanted to be around her while she was sick, she thought he wouldn't have liked her. This is silly of her to think this, a son will always love his mother especially if she is sick he will want to protect her.

  1. Hi Brittany,

Your post has me wondering about the nature of regret. At first it appears that his mother regrets the decision because she's dying. But when we get to the end of the story, we realize that she wasn't completely happy with the decision from the start. She wanted him to have the best education possible, but she also wasn't prepared to let him go. I wonder if she really regrets the decision because she had misgivings from the start but went against her true desires; perhaps she regrets not following her heart years ago.

Thanks for giving me this point to think about.

  2. I think his mother knew that she needed to send him away so he could be his own man and adapt to the culture they were in. She also saw that he wanted to be like him while cooking and maybe that aided her decision but at the same time she didn't want to dismember their family and have him drift away.

  3. It seems like the mom wanted to send him away in the beginning because she wanted him to get the best education possible and seemed like she wanted him to become successful like his father. But then you see at the end that she felt like she made a mistake. I agree that I wonder if she really regrets her decision or if it was really what she wanted

  4. Hello Brittany,

I very much agree with you that it is silly of her to think that he would not want to be around her. I have a 5 yr old boy who already tries to protect me. There is just this special bond between a Mother and her son.
